Part-time treatment for gambling addicts

There is a lot of help in the Netherlands for people with a gambling addiction. Much of this help is provided in groups where people with other types of addictions are also present. Sometimes this can be a barrier for seeking help. In fact, it turns out that people with gambling addictions sometimes cannot identify with people with substance addictions. To lower that barrier, those people could already go to Hervitas, a help organization specializing in gambling addictions. Since January 12, there is a new organization called SolutionS, specifically for people with a gambling addiction, with a new treatment program: SolutionS will also focus on a treatment group for people with a gambling addiction.

A treatment group especially for people with a gambling addiction

Since 12 January, there has been a part-time treatment group for people with a gambling addiction. Part-time means that you are not admitted to a clinic but go somewhere for treatment one day a week. This makes it easy to combine with your work. Every Wednesday from 9 am to 4 pm you go to the treatment group where you are with like-minded people. The group is not too big and consists of about 12 to 15 people.

What can you expect?

- You will be in a group with other gambling addicts, which is nice; they understand what you are going through. The counselors are also experts by experience.

- Your family and friends will be involved in the treatment. Often you are not the only one affected by your gambling addiction. Your partner or loved ones may also have a hard time with it. By also involving those around you, you can come out of the addiction together.

- Attention is paid to both the social and financial aspects. Gambling addiction often involves major financial problems. SolutionS has contact with both social workers and administrators to make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible.

- You get practical assignments and a roadmap to ensure that the threshold to gambling is greatly increased.

- A lot of attention is paid to how the brain works. There is good contact with the Academic Medical Center (AMC) who conducts much research in this area.

- Lectures on applicable topics.

- Of course you will also have one-on-one conversations with a counselor.

When are you eligible?

If you have a gambling addiction you will qualify for treatment at SolutionS. A gambling addiction should be broadly interpreted, for example, you can also think of investing (short odds), Crypto trading, poker etc.. Are you addicted to multiple things, then you better look for another type of treatment. Furthermore, you are not allowed to use alcohol or other addictive substances during treatment.
