Betting on the outcome of sports events is popular. The Netherlands Gambling Authority (Ksa) anticipates an increase in (online) betting and gambling advertisements this summer, including during the UEFA European Championship for men (Euro 2020). Therefore, the regulator will focus on three areas this summer: prevention, supervision, and enforcement.
Several major sports events will take place this summer. The Ksa expects an increase in the amount of advertising and the number of bets. This could also lead to an increase in the number of sports bets placed by (young adult) players. Therefore, Loket Kansspel, in collaboration with the Netherlands Gambling Authority, is launching the awareness campaign "Don’t Play Games with Your Money," funded by the Addiction Prevention Fund (Vpf). This campaign aims to better inform young people aged 18-24 about sports betting and make them aware of the associated risks. Through various channels and media, young people are invited to take a test that provides realistic insight into their gambling behavior and, if necessary, refers them to Loket Kansspel.
The Ksa is also stepping up its efforts toward sports betting providers this summer. Supervision of advertising and the gambling offering will be tightened. Earlier this month, licensed providers received a letter urging them not to push the boundaries and to comply with all applicable laws and regulations with their advertising campaigns and game offerings. Any violations will be promptly addressed. The Ksa is also intensifying its enforcement on illegal betting offerings and related advertisements this summer.
The start of the sports summer also marks the launch of a new pilot from the Vpf. Players who contact Loket Kansspel will receive a free one-year subscription to Gamban's blocking software, which allows them to block all online gambling websites worldwide on multiple devices. Loket Kansspel will offer the software free of charge for two years as part of the pilot.
Although supervision of the gambling market is being intensified during this period, reports from citizens and businesses remain crucial. Reports can be submitted (anonymously) via the report form on www.kansspelautoriteit.nl. The Ksa uses this information to take action against (illegal) providers if necessary.
